190 Barnet Road is a thickly planted, Garden Designer's walled garden . The design is modern and idiosyncratic, using naturalistic, flowing plantings around trees, shrubs and pond, using upcycled containers, recycled objects and homemade sculptures. Hand beaten copper trellis divides the garden into contrasting areas. It continues to evolve as planted areas are expanded. There is a 'Derek Jarman' style gravel garden featuring rusty tin can sculptures. Four white barked Betula jacquemontii dominate the central area, under-planted with predominantly white herbaceous perennials including swathes of sweet rocket (Hesperis matronalis), Astrantia major 'White Giant', oxeye daisy 'Shaggy' and the silver grass, Phalaris 'Feesey'. Moving round, the colour palette changes to a deep pink/purple mix including Geraniums 'Patricia' and 'Ann Folkard' planted around Sambucus 'Black Lace'. Throughout the garden there are Spring, Summer and Autumn flowering bulbs planted through herbaceous plants to increase the diversity and intensity of the mix and to extend the season of interest. An area of hydrangeas, at their best in July, dominates the entrance. There is a kitchen garden with soft fruit, vegetables and a compost heap which is the main source of nutrients for the garden. A central pond helps to attract Insect and bird life. There is also a wide variety of late flowering plants: dahlias, chrysanthemums, colchicums, nerines. Selection of home-made cakes worthy of Mary Berry! Favourite at last opening was raspberry and white chocolate layer cake. Gluten free cakes also available. Many of the plants from the garden are propagated and are for sale, including unusual herbaceous perennials. Featured in Hertfordshire Life Magazine September 2018, 'Small is Beautiful'. Gold Certificate for Large Back Garden awarded by the All London Gardens Society 2021. | |||
